MILWAUKEE RIVER BASIN REPORT CARD
TELESEMINAR
MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2015
12:00-1:00 PM CT, BY PHONE
The Milwaukee River Basin overall earned a C in 2013, which was a slight improvement from a C- in 2012! This is the fourth annual Milwaukee River Report Card, which highlights water quality results from the 2013 water monitoring season. The report card shows that while we have come a long way in improving certain aspects of water quality, that we still have a long way to go before we have clean, fishable and swimmable streams throughout the Milwaukee River Basin. The report analyzes water quality data collected by Milwaukee Riverkeeper’s dedicated citizen stream monitoring volunteers, as well as data from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR).
Presenter:
Cheryl Nenn is the Riverkeeper for Milwaukee Riverkeeper. Cheryl has a B.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.S. in Natural Resource Ecology and Management from the University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources and Environment.

High levels of the heavy metal molybdenum has been documented in private drinking wells in Southeast Wisconsin; however, the source of this contamination remains unclear. Clean Wisconsin analyzed nearly 1,000 well test results from a four county region of SE Wisconsin, examining molybdenum concentrations and proximity to sites of coal ash reuse. This presentation explains the results of this analysis and the potential connection between the molybdenum contamination and the practice of beneficially reusing coal ash in construction projects in the area.

The IsTaplamic Environmental Group of Wisconsin presented..TeleSeminar: Bottled Water Impacts Communities: Take Back The Tap WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 2014 12:00-1:00 PM CT, BY PHONE
For presentation, click Bottled Water Impacts on Communities – TBTT   [PDF]
Brief Description: Americanban-all-bottless have bought into the myth that bottled water is purer and healthier than tap water. This misconception is largely the result of crafty marketing tactics from the bottled water industry, but the truth is that the federal government requires more rigorous safety monitoring of municipal tap water than it does of bottled water. Moreover, what some people may be unaware of is that almost half of the bottled water sold today comes from municipal tap water supplies. When bottlers are not selling municipal water, they are pumping and selling common water resources that belong to the public. These pumping operations can harm the environment and natural resources that communities rely on.Our public drinking water systems need renewed federal commitment, instead of decreasing federal funding for our essential water and sewer systems. Fortunately, faith-based organizations can be a part of the solution by Taking Back The Tap and helping others kick the water bottle in favor of the tap.
Presenter: Alison Grass is a researcher for the water program at Food & Water Watch, with a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree, specialized in Environmental Planning. She conducts research on issues associated with the corporate control of common water resources, affordable public tap water and implications of hydraulic fracturing. Alison is experienced in both academic and public advocacy research, and supports practical policies that advocate for the public control of water resources.

Solar: A Higher Power. A Look at Emerging Models for Bringing Climate-Friendly Energy to Communities and Congregations.
The cost of solar generating equipment has dropped to the point where it can now compete head-to-head with fossil fuel resources. However, barriers to installation remain. These can be physical (shading on your rooftop), legal (don’t own property), and economic (inability to capture tax credits due to nonprofit status). Fortunately, the market is not standing still. Between development models that engage outside investment dollars and initiatives that encourage participation in community projects, it is becoming easier to sponsor new solar projects close to home. This presentation will delve into some of the emerging development models empowering communities and groups to act on their beliefs and pursue climate-friendly energy sources.
